Every time I plug my Xbox 360 controller into my Windows XP computer, it fails the driver installation with the message,
Xbox 360 Controller Driver Software
A friend of mine bought a new xbox 360 controller for PC. He attached it to a computer running win xp sp3, and ran the installation. Of some help if so. Automatic Drivers for Fake Xbox 360 Wireless Receivers - Virtual Vitriol. If you're whipping out XBOX 360 controllers. I think microsoft assumes you can afford to upgrade to XP. And the only reason why you'd have one now is if you have a Dev.
cannot install this hardware because the wizard cannot find the necessary software
but I am 100% certain that Xbox 360 controllers are compatible with Windows XP. I've seen enough of Mike Stephayn's daughters use Xbox 360 controllers on Windows XP for years (2006). I did a search on the problem and came across a couple of related but unrelated results on the problem, one forum post, and a yahoo answers post but both those deal with a 'play and charge pack' that requires additional software but I just have a regular Xbox 360 controller, no charge pack. just a controller on a cord to go to the machine. no batteries or anything related to both those posts. and there is no hits or anything about Xbox 360 controllers not installing past result #2, so this is not at all widespread and apparently very rare that Windows XP won't find drivers. the controller works on all other computers (Windows 7 & Windows 8.1) that I try it on. but not this computer.
